How will bond dollars be spent?

Safety & Security Issues      $49,000,000

  • Asbestos removal

The asbestos in our buildings is currently under a management plan as required by federal regulation. Asbestos is present in ceiling material, some ceiling tiles, pipe insulation, mechanical insulation, and floors. The bond proposal removes asbestos in affected buildings to eliminate a health and safety hazard.

  • Electrical and mechanical code updates

When our schools were built, they were constructed to then current code. But in today’s world, the electrical distribution does not meet our current need. The mechanical upgrades will provide improved ventilation.

  • Handicap-accessible buildings

When doing major construction, the law requires handicap-accessible buildings.

Other Top Priority Repairs & Needs                               $17,300,000

  • Prevention of water infiltration/damage

The bond will repair and restore exterior masonry to prevent water infiltration and damage.

  • Roofing repairs
  • Windows

In the late 1980s it was thought that blocking off windows was the most energy-efficient procedure. Now, with today’s new-style windows, we can achieve energy efficiency and provide natural light.

  • Other site improvements and repairs

Site improvements include removing and replacing
damaged sidewalks, adding curb cuts for handicap accessibility, and limited parking-lot improvements and lighting.

Additions for Population Shifts & Conversions to Meet Academic Needs                              $3,200,000

  • Western High School/Middle School classroom addition

The additions at the Western High School/Middle School complex include 14 general-purpose classrooms for the middle school and additional space for music education.

  • Central High School library, science classroom, and computer-lab conversions

At Central High School, the third-floor library will be moved to a small new addition on the first floor to open existing space for science- and computer-classroom instruction. Additional space will be added for music education.

Total                          $69,500,000*

* These bond projects will cost $69.5 million. The district will borrow the lesser amount of $68.8 million because interest earned over the three years of project construction will bring funding to the required $69.5 million. All costs provided here and in the bond application submitted to the State of Michigan should be considered estimates. These numbers may vary as the project proceeds; however, the total of the bond issue will not change.
