 Volunteer Program

You can be a volunteer in the Bay City Public Schools.  All you have to do is decide you want to do it, make a commitment and we will find a school and a job that fits your needs.

Volunteers work with children and schools in many ways including tutoring students, reading to children, assisting on the playgrounds or helping in libraries or computer labs.  They also support activities outside the classroom such as chaperoning field trips and dances, attending booster club and parent/teacher organization meetings and helping with music and drama productions.

We have jobs and programs to fit every schedule, whether it is an hour a week or one day a month.  The caring presence and individual attention of an interested volunteer can make a difference in a child’s life.

The rewards are great – the opportunity to share in a child’s education, being able to know the teachers and staff better, make new friends, and learn new skills.  On top of all this, you will feel better knowing what a difference you are making!

People of all ages, professions and educational backgrounds are invited to join the Bay City Public Schools Volunteer Program.  The only requirements are an interest in helping and a love of children.

The first step is to e-mail or call Rene Holcomb at 989-671-8107.  Then we can discuss what your interests are and decide what would be the best placement for you.

Elementary Classroom:  Support and assist classroom teacher and provide assistance in decorating room and preparing materials for holidays.  Time Commitment – one or two hours per week, as needed.

Library:  Assist students in finding books, check in, shelve, mend and organize books as needed.  Help with annual book fair.  Time Commitment – two or three hours per week.

Computer Lab: Assist elementary students with basic computer skills.  Time Commitment – two or three hours per week.

Tutor:  Work with individual students providing assistance in a particular subject.  Time Commitment – one hour per week.

Reader:  read to individual students or a class to instill love of reading.  Time commitment – one hour per week.

Rolling Reader:  New literacy tutoring program joins a team of four tutors to work with four children identified by their teachers as having difficulty with reading.  The tutors work one-on-one with each child giving the child an extra hour per week of individual attention.  This program greatly enhances each child’s reading comprehension and learning capacity.  Time Commitment – one hour per week.

Kids on the Block:  Troupe of Handicapped puppets presented to third grade students to educate and provide awareness about disabilities. The skits help us realize that although we are all different, we’re all special too.  Time Commitment – three or four hours per month.

Art Goes to School:  Art history and appreciation program.  Docents attend monthly training and then present slides to fourth grade students.  For many children, this early introduction promotes a love of the arts that they cherish throughout their lifetime.  Time Commitment – four to seven hours per month.

Career Day Speakers:  Share knowledge with students regarding profession.  Time Commitment – One or two times per year.
