2. Position

Elementary

  1. Benchmark 1. "Locate and describe objects in terms of their position, including front, back, inside, outside, right, left, over, under, next to, between and locations on the number line, on a coordinate graph and on a map."
    1. Billy Bug - Position (II.2.E.1)
Outstanding! Students manipulate a bug on the screen on a coordinate grid system in according to the given points. Excellent and fun practice!
    2. Coordinate Graphing - Position (II.2.E.1,2&3)
The student will transform a figure on a coordinate grid. The figure may be flipped, rotated, translated, and turned. Grade level 5 and up.
    3. I Took A Trip On a Train - Position (II.2.E.1&5)
This student activity has children looking at a map then taking "snap shots" of the area as if they are passing by on a train. They will then look at pictures from a different position and sequence the pictures to follow the original map. For students grade 4 and up.
    4. Interactive Mathematics-Geometry - Position (II.2.1&5)
This site contains a multitude of activities using virtual manipulatives to explore a variety of geometric skills. It also gives instructions for use and has links to math benchmarks in other areas.
    5. Shape & Space in Geometry - Position   (II.2.E.1,2&5)
Using coordinate geometry, students play "Taxicab Treasure Hunt," a game in which they make moves on the grid to reach the treasure.  This game reinforces ordinal numbers, and map skills. Open-ended questions are given at the end of the activity for students to practice constructed response.
  2. Benchmark 2. "Locate and describe objects in terms of their orientation, direction and relative position, including up, down, front, back, N- S- E- W, flipped, turned, translated; recognize symmetrical objects and identify their lines of symmetry."
    1. Coordinate Graphing - Position (II.2.E.1,2&3)
The student will transform a figure on a coordinate grid. The figure may be flipped, rotated, translated, and turned. Grade level 5 and up.
    2. Shape and Space in Geometry - Position (II.2.E.2&5)
This site allows students to explore their spatial sense by completing a series of activities. During the activities the students use coordinate, symmetry, and measuring to discover the properties of shape and space. This is a student activity, approximate grade level 4-6. Lots of reading to do activity.
    3. Symmetry - Position (II.2.E.2)
Students will be asked to find the line of symmetry when given a plane fiqure. The computer encourages them to keep trying if they are not correct. There are also many other interactive games to explore.
  3. Benchmark 3. "Explore what happens to the size, shape and position of an object after sliding, flipping, turning, enlarging or reducing it."
    1. Coordinate Graphing - Position (II.2.E.1,2&3)
The student will transform a figure on a coordinate grid. The figure may be flipped, rotated, translated, and turned. Grade level 5 and up.
    2. Interactive Geometry New
Features several applets for discovering the basic principles of geometry. Students can manipulate figures such as polygons, angles, triangles, and parallel lines to learn about postulates and theorems.
    3. MathsNet Interactive - Transformations Online Course - Position (II.2.E.3)
This is the online course for MathsNet that covers Transformations. There are variety of interactive activities and it is appropriate for a wide range of grade levels. For example, some activities are a simple as determining if the object is rotating clockwise or counter-clockwise; others are as difficult as determining the new coordinates after a transformation.
    4. MathsNet Interactive - Transformations - Position (II.2.E.3)
This site includes a variety of activities and information that cover reflections, enlargements, rotations and translations. Activities increase in difficulty so the site is actually appropriate for a wide range of grade levels.
    5. The Mysterious Tangram - Position (II.2.E.3&5)
Outstanding - This is a very student friendly and fun site. Students build shapes by turning, flipping, and combining others to fill patterns. The site gives clues and encourages children by using positive sayings. Good for children 1st grade through 6th.
  4. Benchmark 5. "Use concepts of position, direction and orientation to describe the physical world and to solve problems."
    1. I Took A Trip On a Train - Position (II.2.E.1&5)
This student activity has children looking at a map then taking "snap shots" of the area as if they are passing by on a train. They will then look at pictures from a different position and sequence the pictures to follow the original map. For students grade 4 and up.
    2. Interactive Mathematics-Geometry - Position (II.2.1&5)
This site contains a multitude of activities using virtual manipulatives to explore a variety of geometric skills. It also gives instructions for use and has links to math benchmarks in other areas.
    3. Shape and Space in Geometry - Position (II.2.E.2&5)
This site allows students to explore their spatial sense by completing a series of activities. During the activities the students use coordinate, symmetry, and measuring to discover the properties of shape and space.
