      Student interactive book designed to help student (Grades 3 to 5) an appreciation of trees. Explains functions of plant parts.  Observe trees in their every day lives and explore wonders of trees.
    4. National Geographic: Cyber Tiger-You're The Zookeeper
      This site allows the student to choose the environmental needs of a Siberian Tiger before it is released into the zoo. Easy to navigate. Requires no downloads. Appropriate for grades 3-5.

      This site contains an interactive allowing students to grow a plant. It also has an exercise that allows the student to label a plant.

      This site allows children to interact with a flower, identify its parts, and label a diagram. A quiz is included
    3. BBC Science: Helping Plants Grow Well
      This site provides an interactive activity that allows students to grow a plant. An online quiz is included.
    4. Children's Butterfly Site
      Outstanding - This web site is a very informational, student friendly web site. It contains links to butterfly animations, as well as, other interactive links. Contains pictures and descriptions of lifecycles of butterfly and moth. An excellent launching pad for butterfly research.
    5. Life Cycle of Fish
      This is a report by a student on the life cycle of salmon. It has several good pictures that depict each stage.
    6. Monarch Watch
      Outstanding - This site gives the life cycle of the Monarch butterfly, including a microscopic image of a Monarch egg. The Multimedia Gallery contains photos of Monarchs at all stages. Suggests possible research and conservation projects.
    7. The Miracle of Birth - Chicken or Egg?
      This site is from the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago.  It shows pictures of an egg being candled and hatched as various stages of development.  There is a short video of the actual hatching of a chick.
    8. Where Do Butterfies Come From?
      Lower elementary activity making a paper butterfly. Good illustration of the 4 stages of a butterfly.

    1. Animals
      There is a huge variety of activities on this site.  There are a lot of games and activities that teach animal facts that elementary kids would enjoy. .
    2. BBC Science: Ourselves
      This site contains an interactive helping students identify living vs. nonliving characteristics of common things, as well as an exercise labeling body parts.
    3. Birds
      In this site kids answer questions to play a bill matching game and a migration game.  It has very attractive graphics and several good links.
    4. Butterfly Discovery
      This site is user friendly. It has short lists of butterfly facts and related vocabulary. It also has a student interactive screen to allow students to create their own butterfly by choosing specific body parts.
    5. Cool Science for Curious Kids
      The Howard Hughes Medical Institute invites curious kids to explore biology on screen, off screen, and in between. This is a teacher lesson plan. Interactive question for students to answer.
    6. Entomology for Beginners
      Entomology is the study of insects. This page provides some basic information on insects. First a quick look at the anatomy of adult insects. Then a short story about the metamorphosis of insects. There is an interactive project of observing, classifying, describing, and reporting results to a classroom in another state. Provides information for the teacher on how to use the site, but is designed for student use.

    8. Farm Bureau - Kids Resources
      Information in the site is very detailed on all aspects of soybeans. The site has a variety of activities for students.
    9. Habitats: Includes classification according to body parts.
      Introduction to Habitats - A good resource for introducing classification and habitats. Sorting activities will get the children thinking! This is a free downloadable activity (can also be played in the browser).
    10. Let's Talk About Insects
      This site helps students understand the processes of scientific inquiry and technological design to investigate questions, conduct experiments, and solve problems. This site is also in English and Spanish. Grades 4 - 5.
    11. Meet the Plant Parts
      The site is an interative activity where you match the picture to the word of plant parts. You drag them to the salad bowl and make a salad. This is a student activity.
    12. National Geographic: Really Wild Animals
      On this site children can travel around the world to different habitats and ecosystems. In eachabitat the student learns about several animals that may live there and has an opportunity to choose which animal or organism doesn't belong in that habitat. Requires no downloads. Appropriate for grades 3-5.
    13. Peep and the Big, Wide World
      This site entices ages 3 - 5 year olds to explore science.
    14. Scienceworld Play Online Bodywork Games
      Fun online games students can play to learn about a variety of topics related to how the human body works.
    15. Student List of Activities - Whales
      This page has a number of student activity worksheets and lessons related to examining whales. Excellent site for a whale unit.
    16. The Adventures of Herman the Worm
      This site will allow students to have basic vocabulary of biology: biological compostion, digestion and reproduction told through a guided study of the worm. This is for grade 4 - 5. This site is also in English or Spanish.
    17. The Great Plant Escape
      In this activity, students work with Detective Laplant to solve mysteries. These questions include: What are the parts of a plant? and What are the parts of a seed?  4th and 5th grade students are asked to "help Detective Le Plant and his partners Bud and Sprout unlock mysteries of plant life." Combines Web-based activities with hands-on experiments. The site includes six cases, a glossary, links, and a guide for teachers. Illinois Cooperative Ext. Service.
    18. Trees Are Terrific
      Student interactive book designed to help student (6?8 years of age) gain an appreciation of trees. Observe trees in their every day lives and explore wonders of trees. Distinguish plants from one another. Classify familiar organisms.
    19. Wildlife
      This site features wildlife.  Learn facts about wildlife through games and activities.  It would be appropriate at the K-1 level.  Very student friendly.
    20. Whole Frog
      This site allows students and teachers to dissect the frog, rotate and examine the frog, and put the frog back together. Students can use this experience to compare body parts with vertebrates on other sites.
    21. Zoom Butterflies
      This site explains all about the butterfly: body parts, life cycle, habitat, diet, senses, and defense mechanisms. It has a Butterfly Glossery. Printouts are available for butterflies, as well as many other animals.

    1. BBC Science: Plants and animals in the local environment
      This site is aimed at children ages 6 - 7 and their teacher. There is an interactive experiment and quiz. This site has teacher resources.
    2. BBC Science: Variation
      This site allows students to classify living things according to observable characteristics. An online quiz is included.
    3. Insects
      This is a guide to insects and their habits.  This site has great pictures and short explanations.
    4. ReviseWise Science: Classification of objects
      This is a great site that allows the students to click through animated information windows that teach the basics of classification. Tests and worksheets for the activity as also available.
    5. Vertebrates - Animals with Backbones New
      Site teaches students the differences between vertebrates by clicking on highlighted words or pictures. Vocabulary lists are included.
    6. Zoom Butterflies
      This site is an excellent teacher resource. It includes information on the anatomy, life cycle, food and environment of butterflies. This site includes classroom activity printouts. It also contains a student interactive illustrated butterfly dictionary as well as links to other butterfly web sites.
