In December 2006, Bay City Public Schools held the first meeting of the District Coordinated School Health Team. Discussions included the District’s Wellness Policy and State Legislation.  Ideas generated will provide District direction for implementing Health and Wellness goals beginning in the 2006-2007 school year.  The following ideas were discussed:

District Booster Clubs:  Team members listed various items they would like to see provided to our booster club groups. These are only suggestions, not required changes.

School Menus & Building Nutritional Communication:  Much of this strategy is already being implemented by the Food Service Department.  The team members listed additional items they would like to see included such as adding “healthy tips” on our elementary, middle and high school menus, and sharing information with building principals to provide “healthy tips” for students.

Evaluation & Measurement:  Team members met to discuss ways we could evaluate or measure perception of health and wellness in our district.  In March 2007 we provided a survey to all 3rd grade levels at each building.  In the fall, we’ll provide a follow-up survey to those same students to assess the impact of strategies implemented.

Vending Machines:  For the beginning of the 2007-2008 school year, all student-accessible beverage machines will follow the model policy of the State’s Health and Wellness Policy and the American Beverage Association. Elementary, middle school and high school each have different recommendations.

District Health & Wellness Website:  Team members brainstormed what type of Health & Wellness website we should have and listed ideas so that information could be updated. The website features healthy recipes, health and wellness website links, and healthy tips for kids.
