As the summer months are upon us, I want to wish all a safe and restful break from our regular classroom work, though much activity will be occurring as we gear up for our 2008-09 school year.

Summer Bond Work: The project is on time and on budget. This summer will be a pivotal time for bond work to go on in eight buildings. Planned completion of work is as follows:

·        McAlear-Sawden Elementary: 95% Complete by September 2008

·        Washington Elementary: 95% Complete by September 2009

·        Western Middle/High School: 95% Complete by September 2008

Summer Food Service Program: After last year’s successful “pilot” program, our Bay City Public School Food Service Department will be providing nutritious summer lunches in five locations this summer Mondays through Thursdays:

  • MacGregor Elementary (1012 Fremont) 12:00-12:30 p.m. (& breakfast 8:00-9:00)

  • Mt. Hermon Baptist Church (244 N. Monroe St.) 12:00-12:30 p.m.

Dates may vary, but are basically June 9 through August 14 (Boys & Girls Club locations will begin on Jun 16). Questions may be directed to our Food Service Department at 671-8191.

Summer School: A 2008 Summer School program is in process for July 22 through August 14 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at MacGregor Elementary. Programs will focus on math and language arts for Stepping Stones K, and Grades 1, 2 and 3 (with breakfast and a snack); Grades 4 and 5 (with lunch and a snack); and Grade 6 (Math and Read 180). Questions may be directed to our State and Federal Programs office at 671-8163.

Student Volunteers: United Way recently recognized student volunteerism at an annual luncheon meeting. The average number of hours for student volunteers was around 400 and there were students from our district who volunteered over 1000 hours! Our Bay City Public School students were well represented and have provided outstanding service to the community. We should be very proud of our students. Also commended for the success and energy they bring to the student volunteer program were three staff members, Bruce Hunt and Anita Shillair from Central High and Ann Riffel from Western High.

Graduates: Congratulations to all of our Bay City Public School graduates and best wishes for your future – whether it be in the world of work, college or in military service.

Back to School 2008-09: Our first day of school for 2008-09 is Tuesday, September 2, 2008 (after Labor Day). I look forward to serving our Bay City Public School students and families in this upcoming school year!

Sincerely,

Carolyn C. Wierda, Superintendent
